Month total 862

Now 12 hours and 46 minutes behind schedule...
766/9=85+ minutes a month extra from now on. Hmm... Broken down into weeks it's only around 275 a week then, more or less.

Summertime Sunset

68 min
Start 19.30
Intended to go out to the Soesterduinen for sunset but before I got there my lungs were objecting and squeaking so I decided I should head back and snort some ventolin. Don't know why my asthma-lite is playing up again now that it's no longer particularly cold.

Anyway, breathing went easier after this and I went and picked up Joep for a last 20 minutes or so over the Eng till it was dark and then another short circuit of the streets to finish listening to the Extra Mile Podcast.

Joep with Pussy Willow

76 min
Start 17.45

Along the Eem almost to Amersfoort and back.

vrijdag 25 maart 2011

Week total 221

3 runs this week, Thursday and Friday were too full of Other Work Stuff to get out and over the preferred 250 minute limit for the week, but an increase on last week so still heading in the right direction to get back up to schedule.

Digger Dog in the Mist

76 min
Start 6.30

Joep dug a whole channel in the sand this morning for no obvious reason other than that it seemed to amuse him. Running in the thick mist was a bit surreal. The vague irritation in my left ankle seems to have moved upwards a bit to the inside of my shin. Still, didn´t really feel it till near the end of the run.

Hard Rock Sunset

60 min
Start 18.20
Really, really didn't feel like going out beforehand. No reason, just general lethargy. Coldsore on my lip for the first time in years is a sign that my resistance to infection is low at the moment and various other minor annoyances were just combining to make me feel generally run down. But it was perfect weather and I knew that if I didn't go out I'd just feel even worse so I pulled on my Adidas stretch top pancake bra over the long-sleeved top I already had on (thus avoiding the 'I can't be bothered to get changed properly' argument) and then donned a reflective vest to hide this spectacularly unaesthetic sartorial combo and got myself out the door.

By the time I'd got out to the windmill I was feeling slightly better and when coming back from the cycle bridge with AC/DC thundering in my ears with the great slow-to-start but ending in a good sprintlength bit 'For those about to rock' I was really, really glad I'd made the effort after all.

White Shoes at Dusk

85 min
Start 18.00
Took the new flat girly shoes I bought yesterday out for a test run. Since I'd ditched my oldest favourite Asics in Marocco after the marathon and my other minimalistic shoes in Bath in September I've been running mostly in my heavier trail shoes which I really just bought for snow running. I suspect that that has been probably at least part of the cause of my ankle problem so decided I needed new light-as-possible shoes.
They felt good and even after my longest run in quite a while I have only the tiniest of twinges in my ankle now so I think they were a good idea.

The last photo is of a flyer pinned to a tree at the entrance to the Soesterduinen announcing a walk in aid of funds for an asiel in Italy that was flooded at the start of the month. Just thought I'd put it up here in case any locals see it and want to go along.

vrijdag 18 maart 2011

Week total 170

Still not up to schedule but improvement on last week so going in the right direction.

woensdag 16 maart 2011

Dogs Who Stare At Goats

40 min
Start 18.00
Joep must have seen the documentary when it was on tv recently because he was certainly doing his best on the goat staring front. Run-before-dark with a few stops now and then to readjust my dangling iPod, chat to other dog owners, cross roads. Left ankle still not 100% but more vague irritation than actual pain really.

dinsdag 15 maart 2011

Sticks and Sand

79 min
Start 7.30
Out to the Soesterduinen with Joep who was in fine form digging holes and carting sticks about. I was in better form than I have been recently too and was able to run for a full hour before I felt my ankle a wee bit again on the way home. Occasional pick up of speed with musical bits on the RunRunLive podcast. Weather is perfect for running - around 10 degreees and no wind.

zondag 13 maart 2011

Drill Instructor

51 min
Start 14.00

Out to the cycle bridge and then along the empty field on the far side of the Eem accompanied by my Drill Instructor and Joep. When tidying up yesterday I put my inhalor inside one of my running shoes so that I wouldn't forget to use it before setting out. Definitely ran easier today but as the temperature was a lot warmer than of late I'm not sure now if that was due to snorting asthma drugs beforehand or if the warmer air would have helped anyway.

Klaas only accompanied us for 20 minutes before going off with the car. Joep and I took the longer way home, stopping occasionally to smell the flowers.

Week Total 128

Another half strength week but I hope that not overusing my odd-feeling left ankle now means that it won't get worse and lead to any further injury.

Running Lizard

31 min
Start 7.45
Had to go out with Joep anyway so pulled my running stuff on (having of course laid out everything the night before, otherwise it just wouldn't have happened - Elma's Running Tip #548) Didn't feel very enthusiastic, my ankle is still niggly after 15 minutes or so and my lungs are squeaking a tiny bit again. Must try to remember to get my inhaler out of the car where I last left it for use before cold air runs. Bit annoying that I apparantly need it again as I thought I'd weaned myself off of my exercise-induced astma but maybe the break during my Maroccan travels has meant the condition of my lungs has sunk back a bit. Anyway, reasonable steady jaunt round the Eng. Forgot to take my camera so here's a photo of today's running t-shirt with the Brooks lizard.

dinsdag 8 maart 2011

Crocuses

30 min
Start 16.30
Went out via the bank to the inkstation to refill my ink cartridges. Ankle felt better than Sunday but still not completely as it should so didn´t go any longer.

zondag 6 maart 2011

Dodgy Ankle

14 min
Start 17.00
Had been planning a long run but felt immediately that my left ankle wasn't feeling right. I've felt a vague niggle in it for days but thought it would go away by itself. When it started feeling worse with running I decided it would be better to cut the run short and let it rest rather than forcing it and risking greater injury.

zaterdag 5 maart 2011

Slow ´Fast´ Circuit

53 min
Start 18.00
Decided at the last minute (ie before it got too close to sunset to be worth going out before dark) to go out for a run after all today. Had a new Extra Mile Podcast to listen to and am really trying to get my week average back to something 'normal' for me again after the Maroccan break in routine. Decided to try my 'fast' circuit, which I can usually do in around 6 minutes. I felt that my speed wasn't really up to much but just wanted to see how it went. 7:44... I don't think I've ever been that slow before. My fitness must have sunk even more since the ultra slow Marrakesh Marathon. Must see about getting some proper planned training going to see if I can get back to something like my previous level.

vrijdag 4 maart 2011

4 day total 199 min

Good start to this month. If I can keep up an average of at least 40 minutes a day for the next few weeks I´ll be back on schedule sooner rather than later.

Hazy Sunset, Felled Trees

80 min
Start 18.00

donderdag 3 maart 2011

SUNset run

75 min
Start 18.00
Finally a whole day of sunshine after all the grey days. Went out for a sunset run to the cycle bridge and over part of the klompenpad, back on the far side of the railway and through the village just before full dark. On the way out my lungs were squeaking a wee bit as it was still cold but once I finally got going properly I was able to put on the occasional faster spurt on the home strait.

woensdag 2 maart 2011

Joep Sprints

44 min
Start 8.00
Joep and I ran about the fields and paths of the Eng. Joep did an impressive 100m dash when a hare shot out from under his feet and his hunter instinct took over but there was never any real chance of him catching it and he returned after a few minutes looking pleased with his attempt. Few more short sprints when I threw sticks for him. My own pace was more slow and steady. I was just glad I'd got out running again after not managing to get my running shoes on since Friday.
